Our winners are ... Dining

Mayor Wharton was quick to make note of a recent study that rated cities on their variety of food. “Memphis ranked high,” he noted, “from seafood to barbecue to Chinese to traditional cuisine. To prove the point, the mayor visited Corky’s, winner of Best Barbecue BBQ Sandwich, where he insisted on the biggest napkin they could provide. “I was raised not only on barbecue but also goat and raccoon – with lots of vinegar.” As he dug into the traditional fare, he remained diplomatic: “I’ll never rank barbecue. So long as it’s within a reasonable margin, I declare it all to be good.”

Later it was time for something completely different at P.F. Chang’s, Best Chinese Restaurant, where Mayor Wharton said his favorite dishes are wonton soup (“light and so much flavor”) and the restaurant’s Shanghai shrimp with garlic sauce. “It’s got that diversity,” the mayor said, “a taste for everybody.”

Talk about diversity  —  Memphis loves Blues City Café’s ribs, Huey’s burgers, Bryant’s biscuits, catfish at Soul Fish Cafe, deli delights at Fino’s, Gibson’s doughnuts, steaks from Folk’s Folly, Sekisui’s sushi and Ciao Bella’s Italian fare.

No misery served up anywhere.
